Mysore Style Ashtanga yoga

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga (as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois) is a dynamic system which gracefully synchronizes breathing and movement. Its objective is to promote a strong flexible body and focused mind.

The Ashtanga Vinyasa practice begins with about five repetitions of Surya Namaskara A and about five repetitions of Surya Namaskara B, followed by the standing sequence and then the sitting sequence, followed by a standard closing sequence.

Mysore Style is the traditional way of teaching the Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga, as taught by Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Mysore classes are not talked through. In Mysore class, everyone works within his or her own breathing rhythm and capabilities; growing slowly with the practice to ensure a life-long sustainable practice.

The student works alongside other students on their own program of set poses supervised and kept safe by their teacher. This is the traditional way yoga has been taught for thousands of years and is recommended for students to experience their own developing practice. The teacher gives personal advice that isn’t always possible in a group led class. Each person comes and starts and finishes their practice at their own time (within the timespan outline on the schedule).

You don’t have to be an experienced practitioner to enjoy these classes, just a desire to take control of your own yoga practice.
